AAEA Trust Deadlines: October 17, 2016

The AAEA Trust Committee invites nominations and applications for Special Purpose Fund scholarships. October 17, 2016 marks the due date for many of these Calls. Selected participants will be picked early 2017.
AAEA Trust Call for Proposals
The AAEA Trust Committee and Executive Board are seeking proposals for programs or projects that:

• Support development of graduate students and early career professionals
• Deepen participation in AAEA or reach out to new groups
• Enhance the AAEA Annual Meeting

Special Purpose Fund Scholarships
Special Purpose Funds allow donors to support a particular award/scholarship each year in the name of a prominent agricultural or applied economist. Unlike Appreciation Clubs, Special Purpose Funds are restricted use funds, meaning that any donations they receive can only be used by that fund, and will not be included with the general funds of the Trust.
The following funds currently have open calls:

• Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship
• Anthony M. Grano Special Purpose Fund

Donate to the Jon Brandt Special Purpose Fund

The Special Purpose Fund within the AAEA Trust in honor of Dr. Jon Brandt is accepting donations.  The Special Purpose Fund supports the annual Jon Brandt Public Policy Forum, which is organized by C-FARE. The forum will share economic research with private and public sector decision makers on issues important to agriculture, food, rural, environmental, and related societal issues.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, contributions made before January 30, will be eligible for a direct match (up to $1500). For more information about the Jon Brandt Special Purpose Fund and to donate, visit the AAEA Trust website.

Earl O. Heady Decision Sciences Spreadsheet Competition

The Undergraduate Student Section of the AAEA (SS-AAEA) would like to announce the new Earl O. Heady Decision Sciences Spreadsheet Competition. It will debut at the 2015 AAEA & WAEA Joint Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The purpose of the new competition is to provide a forum for undergraduate students to showcase their ability to address real world problems in agricultural and applied economics using a spreadsheet, as well as celebrate their success as experiential learners.

We thank Dr. Julie Caswell, the other members of the AAEA Trust Committee, and the AAEA Executive Board for their gracious support of this new experiential learning initiative through their AAEA Trust Grant program. Consequently, the award structure will be:

·         1st place - $400 to the student, a plaque, and recognition at the AAEA Annual Awards Ceremony

·         2nd place - $200 to the student

·         3rd place - $100 to the student

In the past, the Paper Competition was the only competition of the SS-AAEA to address undergraduate student research. With this second competition offering, we can now segment that market much better. The following highlights some major differences between the two research competitions:

The EOHDS Spreadsheet Competition

·         Using sound economic principles as operationalized with a spreadsheet, students will solve a real world problem important to agricultural and applied economists.

·         One student per project.

·         Students submit a spreadsheet and a poster for evaluation.

·         Students make a 5-minute presentation at the Annual Meeting.

The Paper Competition

·         Historically, students have done a literature review, collected data on an economic phenomenon, and tested hypotheses. The papers resemble a shorter version of a senior thesis.

·         One student per paper.

·         Students submit a paper for evaluation.

·         Students make a 12-minute presentation at the Annual Meeting.

Deadline: Travel Grants for Economists from LI-LMI Countries

Call for Nominations (24 hours left)

The Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Trust invites nominations for economists from low and lower-middle income countries to be awarded full travel grants to attend the 2015 AAEA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA July 26–28, 2015. Nominees should be professional economists who are from and residing in a low income or lower-middle income country. A complete list of qualifying countries is available here, under the headings “Low-income economies” and “Lower-middle-income economies”: http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups#Low_income. Nominees should be working in one or more of the following fields or another closely related field of applied economics: Agribusiness Economics and Management, Agricultural economics, Economic development, Food and consumer economics, Regional Economics, or Resource and environmental economics.
Nominations should include:

1. Nominee’s name, institution, postal address, and e-mail address.
2. Nominator’s name, institution, postal address, and e-mail address.
3. Brief statement of support written by the nominator.
4. Brief statement of interest written by the nominee.
5. Proposed travel budget.
6. Paper (no longer than 20pp. double-spaced pages, including tables and figures) describing the research to be presented at the meetings

Eligible nominators include department chairs or administrators, advisors, or any AAEA member.
Nomination packages should be submitted electronically in a single PDF to Brian Mondragon Jones at bmjones@aaea.org by 5:00p.m. CST on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.
Selected applicants will be scheduled to present their research (as a paper or poster) during the meeting. Details regarding presentation will be provided after the acceptance notices are sent out.
The funds for these travel grants are provided by a grant from USDA-ERS.
