After Record Corn Sale to China, Perdue Expects 'A Big Shipping Season This Fall'
By: Successful Farming - July 31, 2020
“The product has to make it there in the calendar year,” said Meyer. “While these are good-size corn purchases by the Chinese, we don’t know when they will go (or) if this is a political move to get phase one products ‘on the books’ even if not shipped.”

International trade has cost Americans millions of jobs. Investing in communities might offset those losses
By: The Conversation - August 3, 2020
Arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity, said former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. Globalization, the international trade in goods and services with minimal barriers between countries, may seem inevitable as the world’s economies become more interdependent.

Interview with Marin Bozic about the dairy market
By: AgriTalk - August 4, 2020
"Ten years ago when we had a global financial crisis and the government was buying dairy products in bulk dairy commodities and supporting dairy markets in that way. We’ve learned the lesson in the crisis before and even still. We have learned a lesson that if you buy bulk commodities, the market will stay low for an extend period of time. We were determined to not repeat that experience this time, that’s why instead of buying a lot of powder—storable dairy commodities, the government intervened through food box purchases," said Marin Bozic.

That’s according to findings of a review published recently by Virginia Tech researchers George Norton, Muni Muniappan, and Jeff Alwang and researcher Menale Kassie from the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology in Kenya. Together they document more than $12 billion in economic benefits as a result of integrated pest management application, which more than pays for all the funds spent globally on IPM.

Broad view of food production and potential
By: Dodge City Daily Globe & Morning Ag Clips - July 28 & August 4, 2020
As a professor of agricultural economics, Allen Featherstone knows his way around classrooms and meeting venues. After all, he’s been teaching and conducting research for about 35 years. But the new coronavirus pandemic put a temporary hold on in-person classes and conferences and prompted quick adjustments in how he and his Kansas State University colleagues present information and research findings.

Wisconsin's smallest businesses faced biggest hurdles to get COVID-19 loans, experts say
By: Wisconsin State Journal - July 26, 2020
UW-Extension’s Steven Deller said the larger businesses and those with connections — either through previous enterprises or through seasoned investors — could more easily get private loans, if they were needed. Small businesses, which he defined as only having about a dozen employees, wouldn’t have as easy a time.

Farm Consilidation: Successes and Failures of Earlier Modeling
By: Daily Times Leader - July 28, 2020
MacDonald says, "The finding that
consolidation has been widespread across commodities and persistent over
time implies that farm commodity programs cannot be a dominant driver
of consolidation, since commodity programs focus on field crops, and not
on specialty crops or livestock. Yet the pace of consolidation has been
quite similar in fruits, vegetables, field crops, and livestock. The
widespread and persistent pace suggests that technology plays and
important role in consolidation. In particular, the introduction and
diffusion of labor-saving equipment, materials, and organizational
changes allow a single farmer or farm family to manage more acres or
more animals.
The persistent trend in consolidation calls into question some
earlier modeling that argued that consolidation resulted from the exit
of farmers and farm labor in search of higher earnings outside of
agriculture."

Why Biomass Residue Is Not as Plentiful as It Looks: Case Study on Economic Supply of Logging Residues

Swinton says, "We looked at logging residues, and we found that landowners are often unwilling to allow them to be removed. That alone cuts the potential supply in half. When you account for what is technically feasible and sustainably wise, that cuts the supply in half again. Finally, the costs of processing and transportation add to the price that suppliers would require to deliver logging residues to a demand point. Bottom line, the quantity of energy biomass that is economically available from logging residues is less than a quarter of the biophysical inventory."
