Egg Prices: States Cry Foul

By: NPR - August 24, 2020

This is sort of the largest shock that we've seen or any of us have experienced in our lifetimes, you know, not only to the food supply but, you know, society and in our way of living. And, you know, we still - you go to the grocery store and, you know, there's food available. It's - you know, price has increased, but a lot of that was short term. We're seeing prices starting to come down.

What's the future of farm policy?

By: Farm Progress - August 24, 2020

Since 2014, producers have reported breakeven returns once federal farm aid is incorporated, said Nick Paulson, associate professor in the University of Illinois Agricultural and Consumer Economics Department. The ad-hoc federal payments in 2018-19 and those expected in 2020 are creating a breakeven scenario. In the absence of those payments in 2021, returns will not be sufficient to cover land costs.

Nicotine-based insecticides decimate wild birds

By: South Africa Today - August 21, 2020

Specifically, an increase in the use of neonicotinoid-based insecticides can directly be linked to significant reductions in bird biodiversity between 2008 and 2014, particularly for grassland and insectivorous birds, the scientists explain in a study.

“We found robust evidence of the negative impact of neonicotinoids, in particular on grassland birds, and to some extent on insectivore birds after controlling for the effects of changes in land use,” explains Madhu Khanna, a distinguished professor in agricultural and consumer economics at the university.

Study seeks to increase adoption of soil conservation practices

By: Phys.org - August 24, 2020

The survey examined why some agricultural producers prioritize soil health and how to encourage more producers to adopt these conservation practices, according to assistant professor Tong Wang of South Dakota State University's Ness School of Management and Economics. One in 10 Tennessee families were food insufficient during early months of COVID-19

By: Medical Xpress - August 19, 2020

"Between 2016 and 2018, approximately 5.2% of Tennessee households experienced very low food security," said Jackie Yenerall, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE). "This makes the finding that 10% of Tennessee households were food insufficient in just the first few months of the pandemic all the more concerning."

"Household characteristics across food sufficiency tell a story that is even more concerning," said ARE professor and lead researcher Kim Jensen. "Food-insufficient families were more likely to have children under the age of 18 in the household and were less likely to be currently employed."

Area-Wide Pest Management of Florida Citrus

By: Citrus Industry - August 19, 2020

“Diminishment of pest populations by farmers on their own farm is the most widely used strategy for pest control. However, this is compromised by the mobility of the pests,” says Singerman. “This is due to the fact that neighboring growers actually share the pest. And so the damage is dependent not only upon the local level of escalation, but upon the regional level of mass population as well.”

Who really owns American farmland?

By: AgroPages - August 19, 2020

Three big factors have contributed to the rapid increase in the prices paid for farmland—which is usually defined to include grazing land and forests—according to Wendong Zhang, an assistant professor of economics at Iowa State University. (Zhang tracks farmland prices, especially Iowa farmland prices, which are among the best documented in the country.)

Fewer WI farms filed for bankruptcy during height of pandemic

By: Wisconsin State Farmer - August 18, 2020

"If (the pandemic) had hit two years ago, I think we would see a lot higher farm bankruptcy rates. But we did have a short period of recovery, taking some of the pressure off of farms," Deller said.

UVM study highlights impacts of pandemic on Vermonters' wellbeing

By: Vermont Business Magazine, Burlington Free Press, Rutland Herald, WCAX 3, & My Champlain Valley - August 18, 2020

Jane Kolodinsky, CRS director and chair of the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, noted, “It appears Vermont has responded well, on average, to the financial crisis felt by families who lost income due to lack of employment, and Vermonters appreciate that. With the current uncertainties around provision of additional emergency relief funds, these findings provide valuable data for policymakers to consider.”

Hedging Cattle Prices

By: Hays Post  & Great Bend Tribune - August 21 & 24, 2020

“One thing that came out of this will be surprising to a lot of people,” Coffey said. “If we look just at the average price that live cattle would have been sold for from 2010 to 2020, the hedged prices are lower, but they are only 48 cents per hundredweight (cwt) lower than unhedged sales, on average. In other words, the risk-management benefits of hedging come at a fairly lower cost per hundredweight, on average."
