Analysis: Hurricane Helene’s Impact on Agricultural Producers in Virginia May Reach $630M

By: Augusta Free Press – November 15, 2024

“When evaluating the hurricane’s impact, it’s also important to estimate the indirect impact of future losses. These are the ripple effects on the regional economy that happen when farmers lose income. Agriculture is a large source of income in Southwest Virginia. Helene devastated many of the communities in the region, and it will take large investments in infrastructure and general recovery efforts to help the communities return to normal economic conditions. Some farmers will, unfortunately, need to invest in additional land to continue operating similarly to the way they were a few months ago, because of the infeasibility of restoring their land to the condition it was in before the storm.”

Ham Prices And Choices Increase Near Holidays

By: Pampa News – November 16, 2024

“The lower production is likely because several months of financial losses are beginning to take their toll on pork production. While production efficiency — more pigs per litter — have offset fewer sows, it looks as though fewer sows farrowing is starting to show up in a reduced amount of hog slaughter and overall production.”

Despite Their Critical Role in Feeding the Nation, Farmworkers Face Harsh Working Conditions

By: San Diego Union Tribune – November 27, 2024

“Calling the U.S. farm workforce “critical” is an understatement. Agricultural workers’ labor feeds us. Yet their living and working conditions often do not reflect their immense contributions to society. They face a variety of challenges for at work — difficulties taking leave for sick days or family or personal obligations and harmful working conditions — and outside of work, like securing housing, child care, food, and health care.”
