Why Some Greenhouse Workers May Be More Susceptible to COVID-19

In a recent study, Gulcan Onel, a UF/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Assistant Professor of Food and Resource Economics, used three different sources of data to determine whether some might be more prone to the coronavirus than others. Onel also synthesized existing health and employment data from federal sources. She then compared the demographic differences of H-2A workers with those of unauthorized agricultural workers to draw conclusions about COVID-19 risks among these farmworkers.

“In September, producers were more optimistic about both current conditions and the future for agriculture than they’ve been since the pandemic began,” said James Mintert, the barometer’s principal investigator and director of Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture. “A continued crop price rally and the announcement of USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP 2) payments appear to be fueling much of their optimism.”
