Farm Income to Hit 7-Year High, Thanks to Record-Setting Federal Aid

“They could exceed, at the end of the day, $37 billion in payments,” said former USDA chief economist Joe Glauber, now at the IFPRI think tank. “One thing we know, they (the income figures) will be revised again.” The USDA is scheduled to update its income forecast on Dec 2 and again in February 2021.
“I was surprised the 2020 number was as high as it was,” said Pat Westhoff of the FAPRI think tank at the University of Missouri, who projected in June that farm subsidies would set a record this year.

China's imports of farm goods covered by the trade deal were $7.bn at the end of July. Still Beijing and Washington reached a truce in January that included commitments from China to purchase $12.5bn worth of extra farm goods. Senior Research Fellow Joseph Glauber said, “sales of US farm goods to China were on track to return to 2017 levels this year.”

“Most farmers replied that their coping mechanism was crop insurance,” said Silvia Secchi, an author of the study and a professor researching environmental impact on agriculture at the University of Iowa. “So there’s really not a broader discussion about it. Just look at the last couple of years. There’s no pressure towards making changes to how we manage the landscape. We’re going to spend more and more money to prop up specific crops. Whether it’s crop insurance or disaster payments, we’re spending money on making it worse in the long-term instead of better.”

Purdue team receives $2 million NSF grant to create global network

“We’ve set out to create a global network of scientific teams and research communities to work together and tackle sustainability issues related to land and water use across the globe,” said Thomas W. Hertel, distinguished professor of agricultural economics, principal investigator on the project, and director of the GLASS project at Purdue. “With GLASSNET, our goal is to reduce barriers to information-sharing by creating global linkages between researchers. We hope to leverage those with complementary expertise, integrate cross-disciplinary data and analyses, and bridge gaps between supporting disciplines and scales of analysis.”
“This project leverages and expands the important work Dr. Hertel has led in the Department of Agricultural Economics to improve the sustainability of our food systems,” said Jayson Lusk, distinguished professor and head of Purdue’s Department of Agricultural Economics.

2020 net farm income forecast to increase by 21.7%

“Started in late 2019, what is referred to as the marketing facilitation program (MFP) and the second program known as the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), those two programs across the United States and the state of Nebraska have helped to offset some of those financial losses due to the disruption in trade or the resulting impact COVID-19 had on the supply chain or on the demand for things like ethanol, for example,” UNL Agricultural Systems Economist Extension Educator Jim Jansen said.

UTIA To Launch UT Agribusiness Academy
