US faces tough new WTO fight with China on grain subsidies
By: Agri-Pulse - July 22, 2020
A bottom-line assessment is that China’s reforms won’t be effective to limit its wheat and rice support. It would likely be a good argument for economists, but it may not be what is required for the WTO, says David Orden, a professor at Virginia Tech University’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Hog Euthanasia Threatens To Return This Fall
By: HuffPost - July 15, 2020
Some expressed guarded optimism that hog farmers and meatpackers would call upon the same ingenuity that helped them avoid mass euthanasia in the spring. “The backlog is larger than we’ve ever seen it ― I don’t want to downplay that,” economist Lee Schulz, also at Iowa State University, said. “But I wouldn’t bet against the industry either.”

Farms Are Becoming Popular Staycation Destinations
By: Modern Farmer - July 19, 2020
Dawn Thilmany, an agriculture and resource economics professor at Colorado State University, says it’s quite likely that people will continue to take advantage of what farms have to offer as long as travel is restricted. Beef industry outlook in post-COVID-19 world
By: Beef Magazine - June 3, 2020
“It’s my opinion that the general society, at least here in the U.S., is taking a deep look at the meat and livestock supply chain in a way they’ve never done before in my lifetime,” says Glynn Tonsor, agricultural economist at Kansas State University.
Tonsor and Lee Schulz, agricultural economist at Iowa State University, recently estimated carryover of fed cattle at 485,000 to 510,000 head May 1 and at 1.07 million to 1.34 million head June 1. So, the rationale is understandable.

Multi-institutional project uses satellite data to determine incidences of cholera
By: News Medical - July 16, 2020
"By getting people to load an app on their cell phone, we'll see if people will respond to the information provided," Boyle said. "The goal is to find out if people react to this information so that they're making better decisions to avoid water-borne disease, but at the same time, we have controls in place to find out whether people are just responding to a shiny new app or the health information it provides."

Your New Home Garden is Disrupting The Small Farming Biz
By: Mel Magazine - July, 2020
“We were all sort of under lockdown,” says David Ortega, associate professor at the Michigan State University department of agricultural, food and resource economics. “That’s when we saw a big increase in interest from average consumers — everyday people, non-farmers — wanting to get into gardening. There were fears of the meat shortages that were on the news in April and May, so people felt like, ‘Okay, we need to stock up on food, but maybe we can start that garden and get some leafy greens going to help supplement.’”

Beef cattle experts outline ‘pillars’ for sustainable ranches
By: High Plains Journal - July 18, 2020
“The three pillars of sustainability are economic, environmental and social, and there are ways that cattle ranchers can impact each of these on a local level,” said Myriah Johnson, NCBA’s senior director of sustainability research and recent guest on the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute Cattle Chat podcast. NCBA is a contractor to the beef checkoff and her research is funded through checkoff support.
K-State Research and Extension agricultural economist Dustin Pendell said, “Producers won’t know where they stand economically without collecting data. It is important to have benchmarks to measure by.”

One in 10 Tennessee families were food insufficient during early months of COVID-19
By: Knoxville Daily Sun, WGNS, & Elizabethton Star - July 21, 2020
“Between 2016 and 2018, approximately 5.2% of Tennessee households experienced very low food security,” said Jackie Yenerall, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE).
“Household characteristics across food sufficiency tell a story that is even more concerning,” said ARE professor and lead researcher Kim Jensen. “Food-insufficient families were more likely to have children under the age of 18 in the household and were less likely to be currently employed.”

There are expected tradeoffs of farms choosing between efficiency and “equity” as less efficient supply chain processes may be needed to offer buyers in local markets the customer service and product assurances they seek. However, such “high touch” customer service is likely needed to secure the prices producers seek when they position their products to be higher quality, more sustainable or better for the local community than conventionally procured products.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted direct-to-consumer outlets, like farmers markets. In new research released in the Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (AEPP), AAEA's President Elect and co-authors demonstrate that it is important to keep in mind that COVID-related impacts are affecting a wide range of small-scale food and beverage businesses, many of which qualify as small businesses, in addition to farms and ranches.
