Member Profile: Ron Mittelhammer

Ron Mittelhammer was elevated to Washington State University’s highest academic rank, Regents Professor, in 2004 and served as the first Director of the School of Economic Sciences, from 2004-10. He received his BS and MS degrees from Rutgers, and his PhD from Washington State University in 1977. He has over 250 publications and presentations, including more than 100 refereed journal publications, three major books in statistics and econometrics, and 14 book chapters, with his most recent book being An Information Theoretic Approach to Econometrics (Cambridge University Press, 2012).

His research contributions include advances in econometric theory published in numerous top tier econometrics and statistics journals, as well as publications in applied econometric and economic research spanning a wide array of fields. He was inducted into the Washington State Academy of Sciences in September of 2012. He is a celebrated teacher at the graduate level, receiving many national and university-wide awards, including the AAEA Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching. He was recognized as a Distinguished Scholar by the WAEA and as a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics. In the AAEA, he was a founding member and inaugural Chair of the Econometrics Section.

His service to the AAEA has been prodigious, including numerous committee assignments, AJAE Associate Editor, Director on the AAEA Executive Board, and AAEA President. During his Presidential term, he helped lead AAEA into a new era of organization, fiscal stability, and professional management, as well as presided over the planning and implementation of the highly successful Centennial Celebration during the 2010 AAEA Annual Meeting.
