Recipients of the 2013 Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowships

Congratulations to Leah Harris, Kelly Lange, and Christiane Schroeter - recipients of the 2013 Sylvia Lane Mentor Fellowship Awards.

Leah Harris from Michigan State University will be working with mentor Kathy Baylis from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on their working paper "Matching Policy and Place: Comparing the effectiveness of conservation instruments in different policy settings"

Kelly Lange from Virginia Tech will be working with mentor Lori Lynch from the University of Maryland on research analyzing the ways in which U.S. farmers allocate conservation easement funds among various investment alternatives

Christiane Schroeter from California Polytechnic State University will be working with mentor Timothy Richards from Arizona State University on their working paper "Estimating the Relationship between Social Networks and Obesity"

Call for Thematic Panels: ESADR 2013

Submissions of Thematic Panels for the 2013 ESADR are now being accepted. The conference will take place October 15-18, 2013 in Évora, Portugal with the theme "Feeding Minds, Overcoming the Global Crisis."

ESADR 2013 aims to discuss ideas and proposals to face the global crisis in a sustainable way, through the promotion of socio-economic development of rural people as well as the surrounding society.

Call for Applications: DISCCRS VIII

The DISCCRS VIII Interdisciplinary Climate Change Research Symposium is now accepting applications for its 8th annual symposium to take place October 12-19, 2013 in Colorado Springs, CO. Applicants must have received completed their PhD requirements between September 1, 2010 - February 28, 2013 in any field and should be conducting research relevant to the study of climate change, its impacts, or its societal implications. Call for Papers: 2013 FCSM Research Conference


The 2013 Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM) Research Conference will be held on November 4-6, 2013 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. This three-day conference will bring together researchers in the statistical community from government, private sector, and academia to discuss and exchange current research and methodological topics relevant to statistical programs.

Abstract submission for the 2013 FCSM Research Conference is currently open. We will be accepting abstracts for papers, technical demonstrations, and organized sessions until April 8, 2013. The African Association of Agricultural Economists invites submissions to its 4th International Conference to be held in Tunisia, September 22-25, 2013. Call for Papers: 2nd IARFIC

The Second International Agricultural Risk, Finance, and Insurance Conference (IARFIC) to be held June 16-18, 2013 in Vancouver, Canada, is now accepting papers. IARFIC is a unique venue that brings together those in the agricultural sector, from Academia, Government, Private Sector, Stakeholders, NGO's and others. The theme of the conference is "Agricultural Risk, Finance, Insurance and Actuarial Sciene." The deadline to submit a paper or extended abstract is March 1. Call for Submissions: 5th CAER-IFPRI Annual Conference

China Agricultural Economics Review (CAER) is delighted to announce its fifth annual conference, which is being organized by the CAER editorial office and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The 2013 conference will be held October 17-18, 2013 at Huazhong Agricultural University. The conference theme is "Institutional Innovation and Rural Development" and aims to explore the related issues and countermeasures of agricultural and rural development in both China and the rest of the world. Funding Opportunity: The BEN Center

The Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs Small Grants Program

The Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs is pleased to announce a new award program to support research involving the possible applications of behavioral economics to improvement of the food choices American children make at school as participants in USDA's National School Lunch Program. The Center has $150,000 in available funds and will support 5-12 proposals ranging from $5,000-$40,000. Proposals will undergo a rigorous review process by center staff and other invited peer reviewers. Proposals will be scored based upon academic rigor, relevancy, innovation and applicability, and demonstrated ability to complete the proposed project. Although secondary data studies will be considered, innovative and feasible field experiments will be given priority.

Proposal Submission and Selection Schedule:
  • A short letter of intent will be due on Tuesday, January 22th, 2013. 
  • Invited applicants will be notified by February 1st, 2013. 
  • Proposals will be due by March 15th, 2013 with projects beginning no earlier than June 1st.
  • Proposals selected for funding will be notified by Monday April 22nd, 2013.

The Agribusiness Economics and Management Section (AEM) and the Teaching, Learning and Communication Section (TLC) will present a webinar on Case Study Scholarship on January 14 at Noon EST. Josh Detre (LSU) will moderate as Lisa House (UFLA) and Mike Boland (UMinn) discuss opportunities to publish case studies related to research in applied and agricultural economics.

Honoring the Late Jon Brandt

A Special Purpose Fund within the AAEA Trust has been established to honor Dr. Jon Brandt’s many contributions to the profession through leadership of the AAEA, the C-FARE Board, NAAEA, Agricultural and Resource Economics at NC State, and service to the agricultural community at large.

Donations to the Jon Brandt Special Purpose Fund will  fund the Jon Brandt Public Policy Forum; an annual event which will be national in scope and visibility to share economic research with private and public sector decision makers on issues important to agriculture, food, rural, environmental, food and related societal issues. The Forum will include one or more speakers and funds will support speaker travel, event promotion and publicity, information dissemination in print or electronic format, and other event logistics.
